Over this past summer many Madison businesses have felt the sting of national events that affect us locally. Any business with a glass store front window has been a victim of the violence through no fault of their own. These are trying times and the cost of rioting an looting has surpassed the levels that many business owners can sustain.
One large problem for these business owners is the security of their store and their merchandise. With he front windows and doors demolished plywood has been used up and down State Street and even neighboring streets. Once the rioting and looting stops these store fronts need to be replaced with glass, and that can get expensive. Insurance companies have been reluctant to replace these windows and doors as quickly as the store owners for fear that more looting will occur and they windows and doors will need to be replaced again.
Mobile Glass has been actively involved with helping many store owners get their businesses back to normal and this meant that working in the middle of the night and all day long to secure these businesses. The list of businesses run into the hundreds and many of them will go out of businesses as they will not have the cash to replenish their inventory that was stolen or damaged. When you add the Corona Virus on top of the looting, your heart goes out to each and every one of those store owners.
Mobile Glass has done their part and then some to assist as many store owners as possible but not every store owner is able to stay in business log enough to last both national problems.
Retail is a tough business as it is as the margins are slim and the hours are long including the weekends. Wisconsin weather plays a big part of success and failure and with many businesses paying premium rents on State Street, the landscape of what downtown will look like a year from now is uncertain.
